Many people confuse Minneapolis as Minnesota's state capitol. However, it's actually St. Paul! Originally named Pig's Eye, the settlement was founded in 1838, and then renamed St. Paul in 1840. St. Paul became the capitol of the Minnesota Territory in 1849 because of it's strategic location to the Mississippi. St. Paul then incorporated as a city in 1854 and became the state capitol when Minnesota became a state in 1858. Minneapolis was founded in 1856 but was not incorporated as a city until 1867 (well after Minnesota had become a state).
There have been 3 official capitol buildings for St. Paul. The current one took 9 years to construct and cost $4.5 million. Construction was completed and opened to the public on Jan. 2, 1905. With all this history about the capitol...
