North Dakota is known for wide open spaces and breathtaking sunsets. As you explore the state’s natural beauty, including national parks, wildlife refuges and outdoor recreation many things have gone amiss.

What is the Bakken oil boom?
Began around 2006 and had a major economic impact to the region. The Bakken Formation (covers 200,000 square miles), of which ND covers about 12,000 miles in western ND in the Williston Basin. It is one of the largest deposits of oil and natural gas in the US. Most drilling has been in ND, but it extends into Montana and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
