Revealed: Joys of Summer

Summer has arrived!  Days are getting longer, temperatures warmer and flowers are blooming.  With the excitement of the summer season, many things have gone amiss. 

Were you able to find the 43 differences between the box cover and the jigsaw puzzle?

 


Joys of Summer Revealed:
Refer to box art below for location of each of these changes.

  1. Some of the blueberries change to raspberries
  2. Cream color flowers change to anemones (shown in center on box image)
  3. Another leaf appears
  4. Another raspberry was added
  5. Blue butterfly moved here from above the word “summer” (location #7)
  6. Background of Summer lettering changes color (now peach)
  7. Three dragonflies appear instead of the blue butterfly (which moved to location #5)
  8. Color of Summer lettering is a different shade of blue (and lettering moves up slightly)
  9. Anemone covers up the berries (this flower was in center on box image)
  10. Some of these blueberries change to raspberries
  11. Colors rotate on the sun (as though image was spun)

  23. Watermelon slice is now in front, as well as some cherries and white flowers
  24. Beehive is now the single bee from location #26
  25. Steelhead trout is facing the other direction
  26. Single bee is replaced by the tomatoes from location #18 – and the medium tomato moves in front of the large tomato
  27. Windsurfer changes to a sailboat
  28. Black spots/flowers on the ladybug change to white daisies
  29. Cocktails swap with the watermelon (location #22)
  30. Front view of painted turtle now shown from birds-eye view
  31. Blue stripes appear on the Big Top
  32. Snail color changes from brown to pink, and background color changes to green
  33. Egret changes to a heron
  34. Large and small hot air balloons switch places, and an additional air balloon joins the scene
  35. Bear is replaced by the mallard from the scene below (from location #36)
  36. Mallard is replaced by the red canoe (from location #38) which now appears in the water
  37. More cattails are added to the scene
  38. Chairs and fire pit (from location #40) move in front of the cabin (location #38)
  39. Night sky changes to a beautiful sunset
  40. Bear (from location #35) moves to where the chairs and fire pit location – beware campers!
  41. All the flipflops shift positions

Where does the word summer come from?
It comes from the Old English word “sumer,” which referred to the warmest months of the year.

What is the summer solstice?
June 20 or 21, it is the longest day of the year and marks the start of the summer.

What is the difference between a solstice and an equinox?
Solstices result in a change of the length of night and day, equinoxes do not.  Summer and winter solstices result in the longest and shortest day of the year.  Equinoxes result in an equal amount of daylight and darkness.

When is summer in the Northern Hemisphere?
During June, July and August – when the northern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun and receives the most direct sunlight

When is summer in the Southern Hemisphere?
December, January and February – when the southern hemisphere receives the most direct sunlight

What is the meaning of the phrase ‘Dog Days of Summer’?
The hottest days of the summer.  Ancient Greeks and Romans, believed that when Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky (located in the constellation “Canis Major’ which translates to ‘Greater Dog’), rose and set with the sun, the days were warmer.  They thought Sirius was causing the hottest days of the year.

What role do dragonflies play in the ecosystem?
As predators, they help control insect populations, particularly mosquitoes.  They are also prey to birds and fish.  Scientists believe they are indicators of good water quality and healthy ecosystems, because they require stable oxygen levels and clean water.

Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?
Fruit!  A botanical fruit has at least one seed and grows from the flower of the plant.

What type of yellow and black butterfly is shown in the puzzle?
Krista Hamrick, the artist, used the swallowtail butterfly as her reference.  This one most closely resembles the Tiger Swallowtail.

What are the three most popular flavors of ice cream in the US?

Which can travel faster a windsurfer or sailboat?
A windsurfer!

Intermediate to advanced windsurfers travel about 34 mph. The speed of most sailboats is 4-7 mph, with a top speed of 8 mph.  Larger racing yachts can reach 17 mph.

Where is the largest balloon festival in the US?
Albuquerque, New Mexico – International Balloon Fiesta.  Over 900,000 visitors, 600 pilots from 7 countries over a nine-day period.  It is the largest and longest-running balloon festival in the country.

What is the most common turtle in North America?
Painted turtles – which love to bask in the sun!

What is the difference between an egret and a heron?
Egrets are smaller than herons… but the biggest difference is the color of the legs.  Egrets have black legs while blue herons have much lighter legs.
